Loft Arjaan De Feyter

In 1969 Herman Andriessen built the first Belgian loft in the very rural Sint-Antonius, a borough of Zoersel.

Conceptual errors and wrong maintenance almost destroyed this architectural treasure until interior architect Arjaan De Feyter and his wife discovered the building. With a lot of love and effort they gave it a second life, adapted to the present-day needs.
In his concept, De Feyter watched carefully the dimensions, the alignment and the proportions of the different elements.

In order to make the building constructionwise sound again and eliminate all the conceptual errors, it was completely stripped to the steel structure.

“It was only at that point that we saw the true problems,” says Arjaan De Feyter. “The steel structure was completely corroded at different points so we sanded the profiles completely, filled them up and gave them an anti-corrosion treatment.”

Another problem area was the roof. “There was no vapour barrier and the insulation was all wrong. The solution here was to put an 8 cm thick PUR insulation on the steel deck with onto that a roofing as base layer and a Derbigum SP FR as waterproof layer,” tells us Arjaan De Feyter.

Because as an interior architect Arjaan is not very familiar with this matter, he immediately chose the best the market has to offer. For this he let the roofing company Flebus from Lier advise him. “We talked about the different options we had and technically and pricewise, Derbigum came out best. In fact Derbigum SP FR was used because this waterproofing membrane has a high UV-resistance and guarantees a long durability.”
